Seeds Are Germinating!

by | Jan 15, 2015 | Food, Gadgets, GARDENING, Greenhouse | 0 comments

My babies wake up before I do.  They take a drink and grow patiently while I lay about in bed. This is because i set up a timer for my seedlings so I no longer need to pop out of bed in the morning to make sure they are up and growing. The timer is set for 12 hours a day and it comes on at 6AM.

Seedlings under lights need light and dark (here light is streaming in from a south window and from the florescent lights above) Pea micro greens are in the background and mixed mesclun lettuce in the front..

When growing plants indoors,  lights about 15 cm (6″) from the plants are perfect, as long as you use cool lights (i.e. florescent tubes or new low-energy lights.) When lights are 15 cm or 6 inches above the plants, I slowly move the lights up as the plants grow. So far this winter I have started micro-greens for salads but today I am starting leeks and onions as well as some early tomatoes to plant into my greenhouse in a month.

I really love how the snipped pea greens taste like green peas even though they are just bits of leaves. I cut them several times during the harvest of the crop. If you seed today you’ll be eating pea greens in a week!
