Columnist Helen Chesnut Shares the Garden Journal News!

Yahoo! Yesterday in the Victoria Times Colonist Helen Chesnut reviewed my latest book – the Three Year Gardener’s Gratitude Journal: Part Diary, Part Personal Growing Guide and here’s what she said!

Three Year Gardener’s Gratitude Journal, by Chelsie Anderson and Donna Balzer (240 pages, soft cover, $28.55): An effective agent for firing up enthusiasm for a new gardening season is a lighthearted and warmly encouraging garden journal like this one.

Subtitled “Part Diary, Part Personal Growing Guide,” this newly published journal is arranged with three entry spaces for each date, turning the diary into a three-year gardening memoir.

At the end of each month there is extra space for notes.

Three Year Garden Journal Month Pages

This design gives room for recording planting and harvesting dates as well as hits (successes) and misses (“learning experiences”) as the gardener learns, as gardeners do, by “trowel and error.”

A sheet of stickers that comes with the journal allows the gardener to punctuate occurrences such as “first tomato” and “record harvest.”

The journal is generously endowed with “good news” stories that inform and amuse.

Gardeners can do their own myth-busting by keeping records of their own gardens! Author of the Three Year Gardener’s Gratitude Journal, Donna Balzer, is one of the featured speakers at the inaugural Vancouver Island Mini-Gardening Conference to be held October 28, 2018

A January story tells of “Helpful Husband” renting a “tiger torch” to clean away weeds in a newly acquired, overgrown garden. “I knew nothing of the project until I … heard the fire trucks.”

Every few pages, there is a quote to ponder: “Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes” — (author unknown).

Best of all, this attractive journal is a gentle reminder to pay attention to and appreciate our gardens.

It was no joke when I found Morels growing in my garden on April Fool’s day- so of course I wrote it down!
