When Your City Doesn’t allow chickens, Borrow Them
Topic Today:
There is a huge benefit to having livestock in your home garden, but what if you can’t maintain it full-time or if your city or town doesn’t allow it? Home Garden Livestock part one looks at renting chickens.
“I think if you are a frustrated gardener, tired of picking slugs yourself, or making trips to the liquor store to buy beer for the slugs, consider getting chickens out to your house a few times, and you might be pleasantly surprised, not just by the impact it has on the pest population in your garden, but by the impact that it has on you and your positive feelings about these birds, because they’re pretty special creatures.”
Carolyn Sweet has gardened for twenty years but last summer she called in Hooligan Hens in Calgary to bring their chickens to her back yard. Carolyn and her family were one of the first families to get the rented hens in their back yard and they loved the experience.
This is the story of Livestock in the city: borrowed hens and the benefits both to the garden and to the family generally. Next time we speak to a supplier of Urban livestock and his preferred animal: Ducks.
