Growing Spinach in the Fall
I hate the thought of cooling nights and fall rains. I want summer to stay on a tiny bit longer. But the truth is it was almost too hot this summer to grow great greens. They perished in dry soil, intense heat and sloppy management (I always seemed to be away when they needed attention.)
So a couple of weeks ago I started more spinach in small flats. The spinach I transplanted outside is looking good but quite stunted as it gets used to the changing climate. A second half-flat I started (shown here) has suddenly burst into full leaf and it is – quite honestly- the prettiest spinach I have had this summer. I decided to leave it in the flat so that I can take it inside if it gets too cold. I will start clipping the micro-greens and eat it in salads, letting it regrow as I use it up. Yummy.
If you are worried you don’t have time to grow greens now before it gets to cold do it anyway but be prepared to bring it in if there is a heavy snow or frost. I have my back-up grow-lights on stand-by indoors!
