Flood Disaster Calgary Hits Home
Below are before and after pictures from June 26 2011 and June 25 2013. We sold the house just five months before the flood hit (January, 2013) so our heart and soul are still there and we feel so sad for the new owners and the whole neighbourhood and residents of the City of Calgary who were affected by the recent floods. Thanks to Lorne Kingwell for going downtown to get this recent photo.
On June 21, 2013 the Elbow river breached it’s banks and began flooding into the lovely inner city neighbourhoods of Calgary, included my previous residence. Water and mud were up to the middle of the garage doors in the back alley and residents were evacuated.
A Thick layer of mud remains on top of flower beds and at base of trees. Peonies in bud when the flood hit look like they will bloom regardless. Ornamental onions near the step were blooming before the flood and continued in bloom after the flood water receded. Plants are so resilient.
If you have never seen a 50 year old tree vanish in 5 seconds watch the clip below. The power of water is incredible. The city parks and neighbourhoods as I know them are changed dramatically.
