Thanks to Janet Washburn for sending along this photo of the Hepatica in bloom outdoors in the Reader Rock Garden park in Calgary, Alberta. If It had come yesterday I would have suspected an April fools day joke.

I got an exciting email today from the gardener at the Reader Rock Garden in Calgary, Alberta. For gardeners everywhere the first blooms of spring are a highlight and in Calgary the hepatica reliably bloom in April…. usually mid-April. What a thrill to see them in full bloom so early. Does this mean it is the end of winter? No – there is plenty more time for that but for Hepatica it is fine even if it snows and freezes for weeks to come.
